About Us

Goldsborough is a quiet and peaceful village, set in the heart of the Yorkshire countryside. The Grade II former coaching inn dates back to 1600 and is said to have been named for the Byerley Turk, the first of three stallions that make up all thoroughbreds in the world today.

Colonel Robert Byerley, who owned Goldsborough Hall, acquired a very rare Turkish stallion which became his war horse. Later in 1690, the horse saved his life at the Battle of the Boyne in Ireland. The Byerley Turk retired to a life of stud at Goldsborough Hall where he covered many mares. This famous horse died in 1706 and was been buried in the Hall's grounds beneath a tree.
